Ely Scrapbook

Each fall, high schools across America have a "homecoming" when former students are invited back to visit and festivities include lots of spirit-building activities.
Ely High School students dress up to match a different theme each day.  This is a composite of Alondra's outfits.

The rest of these photos that Alondra took show some of the events.
First, on Tuesday, the school gathered at the football stadium for the introduction of the Homecoming royalty, performances by the dance squad and inter-class competitions like the "tug-of-war" rope pull between the Senior and Junior classes shown here.

Later in the week there was a pep rally in the gym, again featuring the dance team.  The week winds up with a parade of class floats and royalty on Friday, followed with a home football game.

Here are the Homecoming King and Queen riding in the parade Friday afternoon.  They were selected by a vote of fellow students.

Canal Park is a very special area of Duluth.  The photos above show Alondra and Taryn on a recent visit. That is Lake Superior in the background.

Closer to Ely, Alondra had a canoe trip to Hegman Lake, home of some ancient pictographs.  To get to the lake you have to carry your canoe and all of your gear across a hilly portage.  This is the typical way to get from lake to lake in the boundary waters.

Riding is an international sport, one which Alondra got to experience for the first time in a couple riding lessons.

This giant stuffed moose is a nice cuddly seat while visiting the bookstore in Ely.

This is what the country looks like around Alondra's home just outside Ely.  There are lakes of all sizes scattered through the woods.

Taryn, Alondra's host sister came to the Rotary meeting with Alondra.  Here they are talking to the club.

Sarah is Alondra's sponsor, helping her with all the exchange activities.  As all the pins on her jacket show, Alondra has already been to her first meeting with the district's other exchange students.
